Young Lugansk researchers successfully launch “satellite” at all-Russian championship

LUGANSK, July 5 (Lugansk Media Centre) - Lev Lopovok Lugansk Specialised School No 1 researchers launched a meteorological satellite model of their own design at the all-Russian championship Air Engineering School, the Lugansk administration press service reported citing the city Education Department.

The finals that brought together school and university teams competing in aerospace engineering, are taking place at the Lomonosov Moscow State University (MGU) summer camp in Russia’s Vladimir region. Under the championship terms, the teams engaged in year-long projects to design, develop and test rocket and spacecraft models. After passing the tryouts earlier this year, the most successful teams launched their units with the assistance of MGU-designed delivery vehicles to an altitude of up to 2 kilometres or 30 kilometres on a helium-filled weather balloon.

The participants were schoolchildren and students of lyceums, colleges and engineering universities from Novosibirsk to Feodosia. The LPR team took part in the championship for the first time. It launched the LPR’s first weather satellite designed by Lugansk School No 1 team,” a Lugansk administration official said adding that the team comprises eight pupils in different grades.

“The schoolchildren designed and built the satellite unassisted,” he added. 

The satellite test flight was successful. The rescue system and the video camera performed well. The “satellite” parachuted right on the rooftop of the Mission Control Centre,” the official said.

The Lugansk administration said that the young researchers would present more projects in the coming days, study aerospace engineering and launch rocket, satellite and copter models.

Air Engineering School is a follow-up of the aerospace education project “CanSat in Russia” organised by the Lomonosov Moscow State University Institute of Nuclear Physics and the MGU Aerospace Engineering Laboratory.

The objective of the project is to attract schoolchildren and students to high-tech fields, introduce them to rocket and satellite principles of operation and promote engineering professions in aerospace. This year, the competition brought together nearly 150 teams from across Russia.
