Wildfires destroy 300 ha of dry grass in LPR over 24 hours - Emergencies Ministry
LUGANSK, October 5 (Lugansk Media Centre) - Wildfires have claimed two lives and destroyed almost 300 hectares of dry grass and leaf litter in the Lugansk People’s Republic over the past 24 hours, the Republic’s Emergencies Ministry press service reported.
“Firefighters extinguished 108 fires, including 96 grass and litter fires on a total area of 299 hectares. Two women were killed in fires caused by careless smoking inside,” the report said.
Earlier the head of Civil Defense department of the Ministry of Emergencies Col. Andrey Buryak said that the total of 9,000 ha were affected by wildfires this year. The number of fires in the first half of 2020 was two and a half times higher than the last year H1 figure.
The highest level of fire hazard is announced until October 9.
The LPR Emergencies Ministry reminded that making fires in forests and steppes was prohibited during the fire hazard period. Leaving glass bottles or fragments in forest and steppe areas is also prohibited as glass can act as magnifying lens to start a fire.
