LUGANSK, October 14 (Lugansk Media Centre) - Wildfires have destroyed almost 265 hectares of dry grass and leaf litter in the Lugansk People’s Republic over the past 24 hours, the Republic’s Emergencies Ministry press service reported.

“Firefighters extinguished 26 fires, including 21 grass and litter fires on a total area of 264,4 hectares. Two women were killed in fires caused by careless smoking inside,” the report said.

Earlier the head of Civil Defense department of the Ministry of Emergencies Col. Andrey Buryak said that the total of 9,000 ha were affected by wildfires this year. The number of fires in the first half of 2020 was two and a half times higher than the last year H1 figure.

Firefighters registered more than 100 forest and field fires since the beginning of September.

The highest level of fire hazard is announced until October 16.

The LPR Emergencies Ministry reminded that making fires in forests and steppes was prohibited during the fire hazard period. Leaving glass bottles or fragments in forest and steppe areas is also prohibited as glass can act as magnifying lens to start a fire.
