LUGANSK, December 28 (Lugansk Media Centre) – Alchevsk communal workers have fused the damaged pipes after a large-scale accident on December 27 left almost 400 houses without heating.

Two accidents took place on Sunday morning, leaving 386 residential houses and an unidentified number of public buildings without heat supply as the temperature fell to 0°C (32F).

An emergency HQ was immediately established to tackle the situation. By 9.30 a.m. Monday, the city administration said, the affected pipes have been fused together and the Luganskgas state company began pumping heat carrier into the water mains. Subsequently, the water will be branched-off to sub-mains and secondary feeders.

The total number of emergency crews operating 24/7 is 65.

The situation grimly remained another major heating disruption that Alchevsk suffered back in winter 2006. Some of the pipes used to pump hot water from a central power plant froze and fractured, cutting off almost 700 houses of 836 existing in the city at the time.

By February 10, 2006 a third of the houses remained unheated. Russia sent a large-scale humanitarian aid to the region.

Military tents were set up where residents could go to warm up and drink hot tea. About 11,000 of the city's children were evacuated to other cities.
