Ukrainian army violates Christmas ceasefire, shells Donetskiy
LUGANSK, December 29 (Lugansk Media Centre) – Ukrainian army shelled Donetskiy today after Christmas ceasefire came into force shortly after midnight, the LPR mission to the JCCC said.
"Shelling was recorded at 4.20 p.m. originating from Ukrainian positions, direction of Novotoshkovskoye, targeting Donetskiy with grenade launchers and small arms."
Earlier the Contact Group endorsed the Christmas ceasefire in Donbass in effect from December 29, 2018 1:01 a.m. (GMT+3).
The ceasefire has been announced in Donbass for almost two dozen times since 2014; none of the truces resulted in a durable and comprehensive silence regime.
Kiev forces regularly violate the truce opening fire with large caliber artillery, mortars and tank guns that must have been withdrawn in accordance with the Minsk agreements.
The Package of Measures for the Implementation of the Minsk Agreements was adopted by the Contact Group on Ukraine on February 12, 2015 and supported by member states of the Normandy Four (Germany, Russia, Ukraine and France). The UN Security Council approved the document by Resolution 2202 and called upon all the sides to ensure full implementation of the Package of Measures.
The document provides for comprehensive ceasefire, withdrawal of all heavy weapons from the contact line, starting a dialog on reconstruction of social and economic ties between Kiev and Donbass. It also envisages carrying out constitutional reform in Ukraine providing for decentralization and adopting permanent legislation on a special status of certain areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
