Three die in mine collapse in Antratsit district, unknown number missing

Three miners died Thursday in a rock fall incident at an illegal coal mine in Antratsit district, LPR Emergency Ministry said.

"Emergency services were alerted about the incident at Nikolskaya-95 mine at 8.45 a.m.on October 26 by Antratsit police department officer. The enterprise is located in Khristoforovka township and is not registered with LPR authorities," the ministry said.

The rock fall occurred around 8.30 a.m. at 620m depth.

The Emergency Ministry head Sergey Ivanushkin, paramilitary mine rescue teams and psychologists arrived at the scene.

The body of a miner was recovered at 10.40 at 620m depth. At 2.45 p.m. the second body was found at the same level. The third dead worker was recovered on October 27, at 1.15 a.m.

"The other miners are missing," the Emergency Ministry said without specifying the number of those believed to be trapped in the mine collapse.

The cleanup, search and rescue operations are ongoing.

"Emergency crews carry out search and rescue, ventilation and degassing underway. The crisis center is established," the ministry added.

In late September the Prosecutor General's Office suspended the operation of all coalmining enterprises across LPR until their owners and operators secure all necessary state permits and approvals.

Illegal artisanal mines in Donbass are often referred to as 'kopanka' and are highly hazardous. LPR authorities have been leading a fight against illegal mining.
