Skhidkarbon coal mine blast kills 17 - Pasechnik
LUGANSK, April 28 (Lugansk Media Centre) – A methane gas explosion in a coal mine in the LPR Lutugino district has killed 17 miners, the Republic's Head Leonid Pasechnik said.
The explosion hit the mine in the morning of April 25. The number of people killed or injured was not immediately clear, with rescue workers struggling to reach the site of the blast and calling Russian mine rescue teams to assist later in the day.
"Due to the Skhidkarbon mine disaster, 17 miners lost their lives. All the bodies have been retrieved," Pasechnik said after a three-day search and rescue operation was finished.
A national mourning was announced for the killed miners.
The Skhidkarbon mine, the only coal mine in the Lutugino district, is located in the township of Yuriyevka. It was halted in the wake of the Ukrainian aggression against Donbass in 2014 and resumed operation in January 2018. Its 2018 production amounted to 29,868 tons. It ships coal to the Alchevsk Steel and to Makeyevka and Enakievo steel companies in the DPR.
