LUGANSK, October 9 (Lugansk Media Centre) – One person has been killed and 142 hectares of dry grass and leaf litter have been destroyed in fires in the Lugansk People’s Republic over the past 24 hours, the Republic’s Emergencies Ministry press service reported.
“Firefighters extinguished 67 fires, including 58 grass and litter fires on a total area of 142 hectares. One man was killed,” the report said.
Earlier the head of Civil Defense department of the Ministry of Emergencies Col. Andrey Buryak said that the total of 9,000 ha were affected by wildfires this year. The number of fires in the first half of 2020 was two and a half times higher than the last year H1 figure.
The highest level of fire hazard is announced until October 9.
The LPR Emergencies Ministry reminded that making fires in forests and steppes was prohibited during the fire hazard period. Leaving glass bottles or fragments in forest and steppe areas is also prohibited as glass can act as magnifying lens to start a fire.
