LUGANSK, March 5 (Lugansk Media Centre) - The Lugansk People’s Republic Supreme Court sentenced an LPR resident who had passed information on the Republic’s law-enforcement personnel to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) to 12 years for high treason, the LPR State Security Ministry (MGB) press service reported.

“The LPR Supreme Court found Alevtina Popova guilty of the commission of the crime covered by LPR Criminal Code Article 335 (high treason - eds Lugansk Media Centre),” the report said.

The investigator found that Popova had voluntarily agreed to cooperate with Ukraine's SBU and gather information on incumbent and former LPR officials, militiamen and law-enforcement personnel.

At her supervisor’s order, Popova selected candidates for recruitment as SBU agents or participants in the SBU programme They Are Waiting for You at Home which aims to discredit LPR government bodies, undermine LPR defence capability and economic security and facilitate recruitment.

“The court determined the above actions by the LPR citizen as a serious crime against the constitutional order and state security,” the MGB press service said. “However, it meted out the minimum prison term of 12 years to Popova as she had cooperated with the investigators, admitted to her crime and sincerely repented her wrongdoing

Cooperation with foreign secret services is prohibited by the LPR law and punished by up to 20 years in prison with property confiscation.

The note to Article 335 (High Treason) and Article 336 (Espionage) states that a timely report on recruitment by a foreign secret service exempts the person from criminal responsibility.
