LPR People’s Militia wary of Ukrainian army provocations during US diplomats visit to Svetlodarsk

LUGANSK, February 7 (Lugansk Media Centre) - Kiev forces might carry out provocations on the contact line during U.S.Embassy officials' visit to Svetlodarsk, LPR People’s Militia spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Andrey Marochko told a news briefing at Lugansk Media Centre on Wednesday.

“We don’t rule out mounting tensions on the contact line within the next few days in connection with the arrival in the zone of the so-called ‘anti-terrorist operation, of a foreign commission led by the defence attaché of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine,” Marochko said.

“The foreigners plan to visit Svetlodarsk in the period from 7 February till 8 February. The U.S. military delegation’s mission might have to do with the inspection of Ukrainian army 54th separate mechanised brigade units’ readiness for offensive,” he said.

“It is in this period that we expect provocations by Kiev forces in Svetlodarsk salient area,” the spokesman said.

Earlier, Marochko said Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance squad and snipers stepped up their activity on that axis.

Acting LPR People’s Militia chief Mikhail Filiponenko said Ukrainian army units had begun drilling offensive tactic in the so-called “ATO” zone and that they had received river crossing equipment.

The members of the Contact Group have announced ceasefire more than ten times since autumn 2014. Kiev forces regularly violated the truce opening fire with large calibre artillery, mortars and tank guns which were to have been withdrawn in accordance with the Minsk agreements.

The Package of Measures for the Implementation of the Minsk Agreements was adopted by the Contact Group on Ukraine on 12 February 2015 and supported by member states of the Normandy Four (Germany, Russia, Ukraine and France). The UN Security Council approved the document by its 2202 Resolution and called upon all the sides to ensure full implementation of the Package of Measures.

The document provides for comprehensive ceasefire, withdrawal of all heavy weapons from the contact line, starting a dialog on reconstruction of social and economic ties between Kiev and Donbass. It also envisages carrying out constitutional reform in Ukraine providing for decentralization and adopting permanent legislation on a special status of certain areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
