LPR Foreign Ministry: Kiev closes Stanitsa checkpoint to destabilize situation

LUGANSK, August 29 (Lugansk Media Centre) – Kiev's decision to close Stanitsa Luganskaya checkpoint on September 2-7 aims at destabilizing situation on the contact line, said LPR deputy foreign minister Anna Soroka.

"The LPR Ministry of Foreign Affairs is authorized to confirm that the Contact group did not adopt a decision to close the Stanitsa Luganskaya checkpoint from September 2 to September 7."

Nevertheless, she said, Ukraine keeps saying it is going to close the crossing point.

"We consider this step to be a destabilizing factor creating social tension and escalation on the contact line. We consider it unacceptable to impede civilian movements through the only crossing point during the first days of the school year when many people return from vacations."

"Remaining committed to the letter of the Minsk Agreements and assumed obligations, the LPR is not going to close the checkpoint on its side until the move is coordinated by the Contact Group."

The Contact Group has not adapted any decision on closing the Stanitsa Luganskaya checkpoint, LPR acting Foreign Minister representing the Republic at Minsk talks Vladislav Deinego said earlier, while the Lugansk region administration's statement published on its website says the crossing point will be closed from September 2 to September 7 in connection with the installation of temporary structures.

Currently there is only one official checkpoint at the line of contact in LPR area of responsibility in Donbass and it is accessible via the bridge in the vicinity of Stanitsa Luganskaya. Only pedestrian traffic is allowed across the river along a temporary conduit, as the bridge was blown up by Ukrainian forces in early 2015. LPR has been continuously proposing to rebuild it.
