Kiev sets army checkpoint on the road to Schastye crossing point

LUGANSK, November 9 (Lugansk Media Centre) – Ukraine has installed an army checkpoint on the road that leads to the Schastye crossing point, said LPR representative in the Contact Group humanitarian subgroup Olga Kobtseva.

"I would like to emphasize it. Today we have a certain nonsense. It is unacceptable. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian side has installed an armed checkpoint on the route used by civilians; it is right in the middle of civilians' way. There might be up to 18-20 armed people," she said speaking on the Vesti Plus Lugansk Radio.

She called on international organizations to reach to these facts.

"No armed people should be present at a crossing point, it is a matter safety."

LPR can not open the new checkpoints across the Contact Line as Kiev unilaterally decided to change their functionality and has not coordinated essential aspects of their operation with the Republic, said LPR representative in the Contact Group humanitarian subgroup Olga Kobtseva.

Earlier she said that Ukraine has not clarified the functionality of the Schastye and Zolotoye checkpoints that must have been designed to allow passage of vehicles.

The simultaneous reopening of the checkpoints is not happening tomorrow, Kobtseva said speaking on the Republican GTRK TV.

Kiev, in its turn, published a statement saying that all the crossing points on the contact line open on November 10 for vehicles and pedestrians.

According to Kobtseva, the issue remained unresolved.

Currently there is only one official checkpoint on contact line in the LPR area of responsibility in Donbass and it is accessible via the bridge in vicinity of Stanitsa Luganskaya. Only pedestrian traffic there was possible thanks to temporary conduit, as the bridge had been blown up by Ukrainian forces in early 2015. Kiev repeatedly rejected the bridge rebuilding proposals from the LPR and the International Committee of the Red Cross, and it was only possible to agree on the beginning of repairs at the Contact Group meeting in Minsk in July 2019. Pedestrian traffic along the repaired section began on November 20, 2019, but the traffic of motor vehicles including ambulances is not possible because Kiev made the section much narrower in violation of the accords reached in Minsk.

There are no checkpoints for motor vehicles on the contact line in the Lugansk region because of Kiev’s position. In addition to causing much inconvenience to residents of the region, it prevents the delivery of humanitarian cargos to the Republic by motor transport.
