Kiev forces fire as MMA fighter Monson visits militia positions in Schastye area
Mixed martial arts fighter Jeff Monson who holds Russian citizenship witnessed Ukrainian forces’ shelling of LPR territory during his visit to LPR People’s Militia positions in Schastye area.
LPR People’s Militia spokesman Andrey Marochko who accompanied Monson told him that Ukrainian military had opened fire at the outskirts of Metallist village from Schastye direction.
“I feel proud for the people standing up for us. I’m also very sad to see these ruins and even now we can hear the shooting,” Monson said.
“When I talked with soldiers (of People’s Militia - eds Lugansk Media Centre) yesterday and today, they all told the same thing: ‘we want peace’. The whole world and the USA have forgotten the conflict, but I haven’t,” he said, adding that he wanted to thank all LPR militiamen.
He said he heard salvos fired from Ukraine-controlled territory and that he could trace an approximate direction in which Ukrainian rounds were flying.
“I also saw (though the binoculars) a white spot (in Schastye thermal power plant area - eds Lugansk Media Centre) where soldiers (of the Ukrainian army) sat adjusting the fire,” he said.
On 10 September 2016, the U.S. athlete took part in a large concert in Lugansk marking the 221st city foundation anniversary, at which LPR head Igor Plotnitskiy solemnly passed an LPR passport to Monson.
Jeff Monson was born in Minnesota, USA. A MMA exponent nicknamed Snowman, he had 60 wins, 26 losses and one draw. In 2014, he announced that he had applied for Russian citizenship. He received a Russian passport in December 2015.
