ICRC passes more than 3,000 tons of humanitarian supplies to LPR residents in 2016
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) passed 3,179 tons of humanitarian supplies to LPR residents this year, ICRC Lugansk office reported.
"ICRC continues to help the conflict-affected population in ICRC responsibility zone in Lugansk. In 2016, ICRC distributed 3,179 tons of humanitarian aid to residents of Lugansk and city districts, including 1,954.5 tons of food, 191.4 tons of personal care products, 23,741 blankets, 913.3 tons of construction materials and plumbing accessories and 76 tons of medical consumables," the report said.
In December 2016 alone, ICRC representatives delivered 542.6 tons of humanitarian aid to the Republic, including 264.6 tons of food, 22,000 tons of personal care products, more than 14,000 blankets , 68 vinyl windows and 419 square meters of glass.
On 11 January, 2016, chairman of LPR Foreign Humanitarian Organisations Accreditation Commission Vasiliy Nikitin said UN and ICRC were the only international humanitarian organisations granted accreditation in the Republic.
Earlier, Nikitin said accreditation had been given to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
On 24 September 2015, he said LPR authorities denied accreditation to ten of the eleven foreign applicants, leaving ICRC the only foreign nonprofit humanitarian organisation accredited in the Republic.
Earlier, Accreditation Commission members jointly with LPR State Security Ministry and other law-enforcement agencies found considerable irregularities in the operation of foreign nonprofit humanitarian organizations in the Republic.
