Hug urges journalists to assist in ending the war in Donbass
LUGANSK, October 24 (Lugansk Media Centre) – Principal Deputy Chief Monitor of the OSCE SMM to Ukraine Alexander Hug has urged journalists to contribute to peace settlement in Donbass.
"Certainly I will not forget Donbass," he said answering to the question concerning his experience in the region.
"Rather than reflect on the past I look forward," he said answering to Lugansk Media Center correspondent who asked if Hug would have done something different if he had a chance to go four years back.
"With your help, and you have responsibilities as journalists, I know this conflict will end.
"My colleagues will continue to document the situation on the ground.
"I invite you to support, not only, but including based on our reports, those who need to make decision to end this madness, to make the right decisions based on these facts that we established.
"After four and a half years of finger pointing everyone should be invited to stop doing this because it hasn't resulted in anything. Everyone including you, the media, should try to find motivation and incentives for those who need to take this decision, to make the right decisions, to find the solution, not more problems."
Hug expressed his gratitude to the "frequent visitors" of his press briefings who "take interest in the mission".
Hug, a trained lawyer, served as an officer in the Swiss Army, including a stint as regional commander of the Swiss Headquarters Support Unit for the OSCE in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina. He has also worked for the OSCE Mission in Kosovo, the Temporary International Presence in Hebron, and the EU Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX). His term of office in the OSCE expires on October 31. He is to be replaced by Mark Etherington who has experience of working in hostile environments.
